That time Ernie got what he deserved...

That time Ernie got what he deserved...

Doug recalls this one that I'm embarrassed is true.  Not my best moment.

"When we were young, if you rattled the base of your cup on the table, it was a way to demand a refill of your drink from Mom.  It was an alternative to being polite.  Or human.

I have no idea how it ever got traction, but it did.

You rattle your cup and Mom would appear to refill it.  Ideally you would not acknowledge her presence, and of course you would never say “thank you”

Oh, also, one detail.  We didn’t use milk cartons at the table.  Milk was poured first into a big open pitcher first.

So, one night - I think Ernie was about 15.  He rattles his cup for a refill.

Sheila must have finally come to her senses. She walks over to the table with the full pitcher of milk.  And dumps it on Ernie’s head.

It was great.

No one rattled their cups after that."
